Private Property Impounds

Why was my vehicle towed from private property?
Property owners and managers have the legal authority to remove vehicles from their property when parking rules are violated. Common reasons for a private property tow include:

  • No valid parking permit displayed
  • Parking in a handicap space without a valid placard or license plate
  • Parking in a designated fire lane
  • Double parking or blocking other vehicles
  • Expired license plate registration
  • Flat tires or other signs the vehicle is inoperable
  • Parking in unauthorized or restricted areas
  • Abandoned or unauthorized vehicles
  • Violations of property-specific parking rules

Because parking regulations vary by property, the specific reason for the tow may differ. If you have questions regarding your vehicle, please contact our office and we will be happy to provide additional information.

How can I request towing services for my property?
Property owners and managers may contact our office to discuss private property impound services and compliance requirements. Our authorization form is available on our website under Private Property Towing Services.

Can I dispute a tow from Goch & Sons?
Yes. Michigan law provides a process for vehicle owners to challenge a tow, impoundment, or related charges through the district court with jurisdiction over the tow location.

The basics:

  • The required form (DC 90 – Petition Regarding Impoundment of Motor Vehicle) is available at michigan.gov/courts.
  • Petitions must generally be filed within 20 days of the date on the Abandoned Vehicle Notice.
  • Court filing fees and bond requirements vary by court.
  • Depending on the circumstances, the court may require payment of the charges or a bond before the vehicle can be released.
  • If the court determines the tow or charges were improper, it may order reimbursement of eligible fees.

If you need assistance identifying the correct district court for your tow location, contact our office and we will provide the appropriate court information.
